Swansea Participation Service - Video

Hello, welcome to SPS – the Swansea Participation Service.

The Swansea Participation Service, is managed by Mencap Cymru. We are contracted by the City and County of Swansea to support adults with a learning disability and their relatives and carers, to have a say in the services they receive and to have greater involvement in the planning of services. What this means is that we support service users and relatives and carers to have a say in several different ways.

So that people with a learning disability can talk about and share their views on services they receive, the Participation Service enables and supports service user committees meetings and whole service meetings to happen. Meetings help people talk about all sorts of issues that effect services and enable them to get more involved in the running of them.

Many of the people the Participation Service supports, who are involved in committee meetings, also take part in service user Core Representation Group. This group has a broader membership and includes people who use social services, services provided by other providers and Swansea People First.

One of the main roles’ the Participation Service has is to support the Core Group influence and have their say at the Leaning Disability Services Planning Group at County Hall. This planning group is where social services, health and service providers like SPS, WISE, Doorways, supported living, and People First, etc. share information plan for the future and discuss reports and policies that effect people with a learning disability and their relatives and carers.

It’s very important that people have a say in this group.

The Participation Service also supports and facilitates meetings between relatives and carers, and the City and Council of Swansea, enabling them to get more involved and have a say in the things that effect them. For example we organise an annual open meeting event with the Assistant Director and staff of Social Services and also support relatives and carers to have a say in policies, reports and working groups.

The Participation Service also do a couple of other things:

  • We support Swansea People First advocacy group to have members meetings and events.
  • Or, we can help you to find learning disability information or signpost you to where you might find it.

If you would like to participate, get involved, make a comment, or have a say, then please give us a call or email us.
