A Guide to Social Services in Swansea

Swansea Social Services provides services for vulnerable people in our community who need support care or protection.

Often we work in partnership with other organisations in the area to provide these services.

Getting support from Social Services

People receive support from social services after an assessment has been completed. This is where a social care (or sometimes health) professional meets with you to discuss your difficulties fully and produces a statement of your needs. This helps us work out what kind of support will be most useful to you. (There is no charge for assessments.)

We use a set of rules called eligibility criteria when we assess your needs. They help us to give higher priority to people with the most urgent needs or who are at greater risk of coming to harm (for further information see our separate leaflet on eligibility criteria)If we are able to help, we will work with you (and your carer/s) to look at the kinds of support that may be available.

You can ask for an assessment by contacting us. You will find contact details in the rest of this leaflet.

Please note:some services require payment of a charge, although charges are usually based on the ability to pay.

Support for Carers

A carer is someone who regularly helps to looks after a friend or relative who cannot manage at home because of a mental or physical illness or the effects of old age. (This does not include anyone who is paid to provide such care.)

Social Services has a responsibility in some circumstances to carry out a carers needs assessment of informal carers. This explores whether a carer needs additional help if they are to continue with their caring role. (There is a separate leaflet with more information about carers assessments.)

Social Services also helps support the Swansea Carers Centre based at:

Address: 104 Mansel Street Swansea
Tel: 01792 653344

The Centre provides further information, help and support to carers.
